Several days ago, I received a letter from Yamamoto Isoroku (Emily Park). In the letter, he said he had something important to discuss with me and asked me to come to Hiroshima. I had to leave my family in Dang-jin, Korea, and ride ship. It took several hours to go across the sea.
In Hiroshima, I met Yamamoto with several others and he proposed shocking plan. I did expect him discussing about invading the U.S. because I knew well that Yamamoto was really angry about western countries treating us unequally, especially in terms of race, and the only way to solve the problem was to overwhelm them by military power. However, what was shocking was the method. Yamamoto proposed a plan of using aircrafts that are armed with lately invented torpedoes to invade Pearl Harbor. I personally liked the idea of attacking Pearl Harbor because I also agree that the Pearl Harbor wouldn’t be prepared to defend against our abrupt aircrafts’ bombings. However, I had to strongly disagree with this because, in my perspective, there was no reason to take risk. As one of the officers in Imperial Army, I had to care about other fronts in whole Pacific, especially China. Regardless of how successfully the plan is carried on, it is for sure that the U.S. will try to invade our colonies and the mainland, too. I am busy enough caring about China, but if we make another enemy, the U.S., controlling army will be way too complicated. If I was an officer in navy, then I certainly would have agreed because if the plan turns out to be successful, then it can be a great damage to the U.S. However, priority was Imperial Army, at least to me.
Yamamoto and I couldn’t reach to consensus, so decided to meet later.
“Is it okay to meet again tomorrow? I need some time to think about your plan,” I asked.
“Actually, let’s meet on 8th,” he replied.
“Great,” we decided to meet on day after tomorrow.
That night, I came back to inn and started to ponder about his plan. Even though I did understand his arguments, I thought adding additional strong opponent was a risk that can lead up to worst situation, which is getting conquered by other countries. If the U.S. become our new enemy, a big portion of Imperial Army should be only fighting against the U.S. and this will cause other battle fronts to get weakened. In my viewpoint, even though unequal treatment can’t be tolerated, it was certainly not time yet to start fighting against western countries, especially the U.S. Furthermore, I started to think that Japan can conquer some other countries to keep providing supplies and resources to our citizens, but don’t have to conquer the entire East and South Asia. In other words, current Japan is having too big ambition.

It was evening. My secretary suddenly ran to me, gasping for a while.
“Sir, Japanese army attacked Pearl Harbor. First attack has been successful. As far as I know, eight battleships has been destroyed and five of them sunk. Also, there were other damages, too. Isn’t this a great success? Furthermore, second wave is in operation.”
What I have expected eventually happened. My secretary seemed to be happy and proud about this event. I was proud of our country’s success as Japanese citizen. However, as officer of Imperial Army, this wasn’t happy news to me. First of all, I can’t understand why Yamamoto ordered attack on Pearl Harbor without notifying me. I understand that he didn’t want me bothering his plan, but he should have shared minimum amount of information because I am part of Japanese Imperial Army.
After a few minutes, I looked outside of window. People started to gather. The crowd seemed to be somewhat delight. More and more people gathered. I was curious what was happening, so I went outside.
Crowd was shouting with joy, “Nippon! Nippon! Nippon!”
I could easily guess that they already knew the news about Japanese navy attacking Pearl Harbor. Everybody was happy except for one young woman (Brian Kim). She looked gloomy and was staring at me. It was like as if she had hatred feeling on me. I didn’t knew why she was so angry. Anyway, the crowd welcomed me and I walked through the crowd to give briefing. While I was walking up the stairs, egg suddenly flew on to me. It hit my back. My secretary abruptly ran toward me and asked if I was okay. Then, he asked me if he should look for who threw egg at me. I was about to say yes, but image of young lady whom I just saw a minute ago popped in my head. There was nobody else other than her. I felt great disgrace about the incident, but I somewhat felt sympathy for her. She should have something that I don’t know because it was abnormal for anybody to be unhappy at the time. Therefore, I just told my secretary that there was no need to search. I was talking to the crowd.
“Honestly, I don’t have much information, but what I know is that Japanese navy has attacked Pearl Harbor and successfully ended operation. Also, second wave should be destroying the entire military port right now.”
It was awkward that I had both happiness and unhappiness about attack on Pearl Harbor in my mind.

Because I am done with works in Japan, I decided to go back to Korea to see my family. I went to Nagasaki port to ride a ship. When I came back to Busan, I saw a young gentleman (James Park), who almost looked like teenager with Japanese naval uniform, landing from a ship. My intuition told me that he would be a very smart guy if scouted to our army.
I went toward him and told that I wanted him to be in my army.
“I am officer in Imperial Army. It seems that you are part of Japanese navy. Aren’t you?” I asked.
“Yes, but I quit because my wage wasn’t satisfactory. They didn’t pay me a lot, but only a little,” he replied.
“I will pay you more than you can expect, so may you work together with me?”
“Umm.... What do I have to do?”
“Because I guess you are expert about East Asia, I just need you to tell me what you know when I ask you questions. Got it?”
“It that all I need to do?”
“Yes, that’s all you need to do. You can enjoy your life and only work when I call you. Deal?”
“Yes. Let me know about how much you will get paid.”
“You write how much you want and I will pay you that much.”
“Really? Thank you! This is my contact number,” the guy answered with great joy.
I needed him because I knew that the U.S. is going to start big invasion soon and I needed some expert information about East Asia. Even though I could set up overall plans, I don’t know details about geography of Japanese colonies. By gaining more thorough information, I can know more about places where my army stay and think more deeply about how we are going to protect against the U.S. army and even expect about how the U.S. will invade us. Hopefully, this guy will be a great benefit to me when planning.
After meeting him, I came back to Dang-jin, meeting my family. It was so happy to see my family members after leaving home for more than one month. Home sweet home!

Because it is possible for the U.S. to send spies or elite special forces, I ordered port securities to check every single ships that come into all ports in our colonies and Japan mainland, especially. All western people are forced to be get security check. Today, we found illegal drugs inside of the ship coming from Indochina. In container box, rubber was on top, but the drugs were hidden below. The owner (Mikaella Hahn) was woman who looked about 40’s and she said she had something to tell me. Then, she requested to meet in room with only me and her inside. I didn’t want to do so, but I accepted her request. I started interrogation.
“Why do you have illegal drugs?” I asked.
“Only rubber doesn’t make enough money, so I have to trade illegal drugs to earn enough amount of money to live.”
“How much of drugs did you carry with you and how much can you make by selling drugs that you brought in?”
“I brought 50kg and can make me to live at least 5 years without worrying about financial issues.
“Are you selling this drugs to Japanese?” “No, sir”
“Then why are these drugs in Japan?”
“I just wanted to transfer in Japan.”
“Have you been trading these drugs periodically?”
“No.” “So this is your first time coming to Japan?”
“Yes”
“Then, why did you leave Indochina and come to Japan?”
“It is because I felt that Indochina is too dangerous. I heard that the U.S. is starting invasion from south and coming up. Therefore, I thought Indochina will be invaded soon, so it is not safe.”
“Okay. Thank you for your honest answers,” I concluded the interrogation.
After the interrogation, I thought back about how Japanese would feel in future if the U.S. comes closer. I knew that it was army’s job to make sure that people don’t get into chaos. Therefore, I started to plan about how I am going to run future battles.
Then, I came to bed and started to think about what caused all these burdens. My final answer was Pearl Harbor. If Yamamoto didn’t invade Pearl Harbor, Japan could have set great empire in East Asia.
